My parents and my brother were at the game that night. So far, my mom and dad had made it to every home game, but this was Brandon’s first. I didn’t always meet up with them afterward, but in light of my goal, I figured they’d want to stop by and offer their congratulations.

“About time you found the back of the net,” Brandon said as I approached them.

There was a family resemblance between me and my brother. We both had green eyes and shared the same build. Brandon was a couple of inches shorter than me and definitely not the pretty boy type, though. His features were more rugged, and his hair was dark brown like our father’s. His personality was a lot like Dad’s as well.

I shrugged, trying to act like I hadn’t been stressed about my drought. “I wasn’t worried.”

“Bullshit.” He smirked and gave me one of those manly hugs, complete with the backslap. I loved him dearly, but sometimes he went out of his way to prove he was a man’s man. Unlike his gay brother.

“Brandon,” Mom chastised him. “There’s nothing wrong with the way Derek has been playing. Being with a new group of guys is always an adjustment.”

Mom was no slouch when it came to the ins and outs of the game. She knew her stuff. I’d have to say she’s probably my biggest fan. Mom was the cheerleader of the family. She left the criticism to my dad and Brandon, which they had no problem doing.

“Sorry, bro.” He mussed my hair, just to piss me off. You’d think that we’d be past this annoying shit by now. “Just trying to make sure you don’t get too cocky. It’s about time Ladouceur started passing you the puck. What took him so long?”

“It’s been an adjustment,” I replied diplomatically. Brandon knew Trevor and I had been close during the World Junior Championship, but that was it. I never cried on his shoulder about how Trevor loved me and left me. Brandon and I didn’t have that type of relationship. He preferred it if I didn’t talk about my personal entanglements, which was fine with me.

“I think the Wheels were smart to reunite you guys. You just need to keep playing like a cohesive unit.” There, Brandon had said something somewhat complimentary.

“The last few games have been a lot of fun to watch,” Dad spoke up. “Reminds me of old times.”

Me too.

“Speak of the devil,” Brandon murmured, peering over my shoulder.

I glanced behind me, and there was Trevor, dressed and ready to go. He lingered by the entrance to the locker room, watching us—well, until I spotted him. Then he glanced away, trying to act all casual.

“You should have him come over,” Mom said, touching my arm. “I’d love to say hello. It’s been so long.”

“Yeah, I’d love to see the other half,” Brandon said. “I want to tell him he needs to pass my little brother the puck more often.”

My eyes narrowed. “You better not.”

“Just trying to look out for you,” Brandon replied, patting my shoulder.
